TCSL Teachers Participated in the Training Workshop at Goethe Institute
October 28, 2011 and November 18, 2011, Munich

On October 28, 2011 and November 18, 2011, Confucius Classroom Munich and Goethe Institute Headquarters jointly organized a training workshop on how to teach speaking and listening skills. Goethe Institute has nearly 60 years' history in teaching German as a foreign language. It has built up a network of 136 institutes in 93 countries, and there are 750 cooperative partners around the world.

A total of 22 native TCSL (Teaching Chinese as a Second Language) teachers took apart in it. The instructor for the oral part is Ms. Silvia Reckermann, and for the listening part is Ms. Susanne Schwalb who is one of the authors of "EM", which is familiar to the most German learners.

Colleges and universities in China prefer to teach Chinese as a second language from four basic skills, such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. Numerous language training institutions in and abroad take an integrated approach, and Goethe Institute as well. Goethe Institute highly emphasizes on edutainment in both oral and listening teaching. The instructors introduced some different effective games, for example, "Monopoly", "Ball Throwing ", and "Guess Guess". They are not only suitable for kids but also for adults in teaching process, and they play an important role in language classes.

Besides, the instructors created a total German-speaking environment during the training process. The trainee teachers know that it is a very important and effective teaching method, which can make learners completely immerse in the target language environment during the class learning. In other words, it makes enormous demands on teachers.

The trainee teachers had a deep impression on the German teaching materials they used. The appearance of the book was colorful and well-illustrated, and most importantly, the content was very practical. It is worth mentioning that the listening materials are based on real life, and some dialogues are with real background noise from airports, train stations and so on. A variety of exercises in the books, which are easy to understand for both teachers and learners, can help learners drill step by step.

The cooperative training workshop held by Confucius Classroom Munich and Goethe Institute Headquarters is very meaningful and helpful. It makes the local Chinese teachers widen their thinking in teaching, and learn much more active teaching methods and concepts, and at the same time they did a very good communication. Because the German grammar is different from Chinese one, the Chinese teachers cannot completely copy the teaching way. So they must think about how to modify it and innovate, then they can improve their teaching techniques.
